From the Classic Chairs’ collection of originals, this stunning copy is from George III’s reign, and is attributed to Richard Smirke (1788 – 1825). Copied exactly, the decoration is of a scene from classical antiquity, with terracotta coloured figures on a black japanned ground, with gold leaf and finely painted details. As the chair is hand caned, it should always be used with a reversible ‘squab’ cushion– the one pictured here is an elaborate, hand woven silk cushion with ruched borders and is decorated with 12 metres of French multi-coloured cord. This can be, of course in your choice of fabric and finish.
